For those Modafinil fans out there, a prodrug is out for you to get your hands on legally in the United States. This drug is called Adrafinil and it is currently unregulated in the US. Adrafinil is very common in Europe and Russia and is used to treat ADD and other attention disorders as well as Narcolepsy.

This ADHD drug has not been evaluated by the FDA and therefore not regulated within the US drug market. This means that Adrafinil is legal to import from outside the country without a prescription. This prodrug can be purchased in both, pill or powder form.

Adrafinil was discovered in the late 1970’s and was investigated as a treatment for narcolepsy. While studies were being done on the drugs’ effectiveness for narcolepsy, it was found that Adrafinil converts to Modafinil within the liver. With this new knowledge, many studies were discontinued due to the side effects and half-life being worse than Modafinil. No American drug companies wanted a Ritalin prodrug with more side effects.

This brings us to now. Adrafinil has remained unregulated because companies will not make money off it. Their greed allows nootropic and smart drug fans to use it legally and without hassle of the DEA. Its effects are almost identical to Ritalin but with more side effects. It is really up to you if you want to use it but if you decide to you must be careful and use it responsibly.

Adrafinil converts to Modafinil by metabolism in the liver. The process involves enzymatic breakdown of Adrafinil. During the breakdown, Modafinil is created which results in almost identical pharmalogical effects.

The conversion process of Adrafanil to Modafinil creates some hepatoxicity within the liver. You must not take Adrafinil if you have had liver problems or suspect you may. Mixing Adrafinil with other drugs is dangerous and may put excess strain on the liver to result in permanent damages. It is recommended if you are going to take high doses of Adrafinil, to take liver enzyme tests to determine that your liver is healthy enough to handle the process safely.

The pharmalogical effects of Modafinil and Adrafinil are almost identical. The main difference between the two is pharmalogical breakdown. Modafinil has a 12 hour half-life as compared to Adrafinil, which has a 1 hour half-life. This half-life difference is likely to be irrelevant to length of effects because both drugs end up identical in the liver. Also, Adrafinil takes longer to “activate” in the system. Usually the metabolic breakdown in the liver begins 1 hour after ingestion. Taking the drug on an empty stomach will increase how fast the drug takes to work.

Side Effects of Adrafinil

Typically the side effects are very similar to Modafinil. This includes the following common physiological side effects: anxiety, irritability, insomnia and depression. Adrafinil also carries other side effects, such as: upset stomach, digestion problems, skin rash and increase in liver enzymes. The increase is liver enzymes is the most concerning as it can relate to liver damage. The risk of liver damage is highly increased when other outsides stress is put on the liver. A user can minimize this risk by lowering the dose and not mixing the drug with other substances or drugs. Liver support supplements can also help reduce the risk of complications. In most cases, a healthy liver will not be damaged in the breakdown due caution is necessary

Dosages

Dosages of 2-4 300mg tablets per day are common by prescription in Europe. Prescribed treatments for narcolepsy are often even higher. Most people that use Adrafinil to increase focus and mental agility can find effectiveness with a lower dose. To receive these benefits 100mg or less should be needed. This will also significantly reduce risks of damage to the liver.

Conclusion

Although Adrafinil can be obtained easily and cheaply it may not be the best nootropic choice for you. Modafinil has the same effects and is safer so if you wish to go the drug route it may be more useful to obtain. If you are looking strictly to increase focus and mental energy, natural sources may be much more feasible. They have similar effects with fewer side effects.
